Jewelry Status and Luxury
Diamonds and precious stones are a synonym of wealth and power.
Societies value jewelry and wear jewels as a lifestyle statement.
The Romans were among the first civilizations to harness the power of jewelry. Rings were a
privilege of a few. Only certain citizens could, based on rank, show them in public.
Gold, for example, is not universally accepted in jewelry. Western countries consider gold a
special and valuable metal, but Islam societies do not approve the wearing of gold by men.
The New Testament also believes that the excessive display of the yellow metal is not
positive.
Humanity has been exploring and discovering new jewelry resources, in many parts of the
planet, from Brazil and Australia, to Sri Lanka, India or South Africa.
As precious stones reach a broader market, jewels and gems gain popularity. At the same
time, the high end luxury pieces get new levels of complexity and price rises to the billionaire
club elite.
The most rare and unique gems are available for a restricted elite. There are also a growing
number of investors willing to exchange shares for jewels, because of the stability value they
offer. Of course, time and age are often playing for the jewelry side.
Wearable jewelry is also a way of defining trends in the fashion industry, another industry
which is very much touched by the power of status and wealth. Just like a formal night dress
has perfect cut, a diamond polish and cut is absolutely decisive to set a market price.
When a man offers a diamond ring, he's admiring and respecting a woman. In African nations,
necklaces are a meaning of birth and fertility.
The most powerful and influent citizens of the UK, USA, Italy, France, Germany and Japan own
and care for their private jewelry collections. In the last decades of the 20th century, antique
and vintage jewelry has seen an interesting growth, as part of the birth of jewelry investment
funds.
The art, the history behind each gem, the rarity, the uniqueness and beauty of jewelry pieces
are setting the patterns of a treasure that only brings power, status and wealth to their
owners.
